Hidden Corners

Our main character finds herself stunted — paralyzed — as she begins to look inward.

She sees all of these things, but does not engage them. They feel like an overwhelming barrage; chaos; an active, looming feeling of helplessness.

She experiences these forms as a wall. They invite her to engage, and she tries to do so, but she feels she cannot move towards them.

Artist’s Insights

My entry into motherhood came via the severe premature birth of my son, who was born at 24 weeks 5 days gestation at the University of Utah hospital in 2004.

Returning to this campus 17 years later stirred up silt that I thought had long settled. I sensed that it was time for me process the experience on another level, but felt terrified at that prospect.

Initially, I chose an abstract format to allow anything to come up from inside that wanted to. I became curious about repeated themes related to hair, circles, curves, roots, and, to my surprise, larvae. Always, there seemed to be a force or presence behind the images, as though something were trying to come out.

In the end, each of these pieces foreshadowed significant works later in the show. It may be of interest to the viewer to consider referencing these images repeatedly as they move through the rest of the pieces.
